Back to School

When COVID-19 stormed the globe in 2019 many facets of life both in Nepal and around the world were disrupted. Perhaps one of the most consequential outside of the medical crisis, was the cancelation of school for children around the globe. So what a treat it is for us to finally share that as of this past month, all of our Kailash Kids have returned to in-person schooling!

All of our partner schools in Kathmandu are now open to students again, and the children are once again receiving all the benefits of in-person instruction. Along with additional health & safety precautions, many of the schools in Nepal have slightly altered daily class schedules and extended the academic term in order to make up for any lag due to months of virtual schooling meaning that classes and exams will extend into May-July.

It has been roughly 53 weeks since schools in Nepal closed to in-person classes, and international organizations like UNESCO and the World Bank have been warning of the long lasting impacts educational disruptions will have on the world’s children, including on over 8 million Nepali students. Undoubtedly the global community will continue to feel the ripple effects of school closures and loss of access for decades, if not longer.

Thanks to the generosity of our HYF community in this challenging year, we were able to implement a new in-house educational program at Kailash Home, supplement our technological resources, and give all of our children access to the tools and instruction they needed to stay up to date with their education even during lockdown. Our children are better prepared to excel and succeed because of you. Thank you for supporting our #KailashKids!
