A New School Year Begins

While students here in the United States are enjoying the last of their summer holiday, our Kailash Kids have started a brand new school year. With COVID cases high and vaccination numbers still low across Nepal though, this term is progressing completely virtually with remote learning only. Thanks to our experience over the past year however, we were ready and well equipped for this reality.

The previous academic year was unsettled for students around the world, and especially so in Nepal, so the HYF + Kailash team knew that approaching this semester, our students would need additional assistance to stay on track and in some cases make up lost ground. In addition to several professional tutors, a handful of Kailash senior students and alumni have stepped up in a big way to support our younger children.

Thirteen of the Seniors at Kailash were selected as tutors to assist their younger brothers and sisters with homework and virtual lessons. We are so proud of these young people who are not only providing invaluable academic support but are also an embodiment of the character of the wider HYF community.

In addition to the current student tutors, three graduate students contacted HYF and asked if they could give back to Kailash by providing tutoring to our current Kailash Kids. These alumni lived on campus at Kailash for several months during lockdown, and their assistance directly contributed to the success exam results of many of our younger students. As one senior Kailash staff member put it:

Education has always been at the forefront of our mission here at HYF, and if anything, the challenges of the past 18 months have only increased our dedication to this goal. We enter this new academic year with full confidence that all of our children will be able to thrive and succeed.
